Unique Patterns: A Walkthrough Not Just a Recipe

The first thing you will probably notice when you are printing out one of my patterns is its length. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS BE DAUNTING!!

Unique Patterns

The length of the pattern does NOT mean it is complicated... in fact, all of my designs are simple and straightforward. The length of each pattern comes from my attempt to give you everything you need to be able to make your way through to the end without having to consult the knitting and crochet gods, or even without ripping out tons of work because the pattern was not clear!

Here's what I'm giving you:

  • A list of all the supplies you'll need for the project.
  • Notes on whether gauge is important, why not, and if it is, how to go about getting the correct gauge.
  • Abbreviations and Stitches you WILL need to know in order to begin.
  • Memory Refreshers for those "inconsequential" things we sometimes forget, like which cast on, how to whip stitch, fasten off, etc.
  • Step-by-Step Walkthrough... including alerts for things to watch out for, possible pitfalls, ways to "fix" problems, ways that I've found to do things that I think are simplest, how to put things together, etc.
  • Yarns I've used or ones I suggest... In some patterns I will give you guidelines for choosing yarns... how to think about color, textures, stitches, etc.
  • Variations on that particular pattern which might spark your own creativity and allow you to make scads of versions of the one pattern.

My motivation behind all this is to give you MORE than just a bland recipe in a greek language, but something fun to read in your own language (albeit using traditional knit & crochet abbreviations). I'm also hopeful that from using a few of my patterns, you'll begin to see how you can create your own versions and variations, not only from my patterns but from others as well. This is what turns your knitting and crocheting into art... making it your own.

What I will NOT have in a pattern, is a diagram, at least for now. This is not because I don't like diagrams of stitches and colorwork... I like these visual pictures and have found them very helpful in other patterns. But I have always preferred to see it all written out. I usually have to convert other pattern diagrams and write it all out so I can understand it and follow it more easily. The very best patterns offer BOTH options. But mine will usually just have the written out approach.

So here's to YOU... my yarn friend!

Let me know how it goes... you can send me a picture too if you'd like at info@yarnworksbyjennifer.com.
